Title: Mistaken Friendship
contributed by: pinklady0122,  November 19, 2006

Two friends are facing each other in the dining table. The guy is busy reading a book, while the lady is sipping her coffee.

"I am leaving tomorrow", she mumbled abruptly.

"That's surprising, I haven't known", he answered without lifting his head from his book.

"You knew", she said, almost speaking under her breath.

He glanced at her; she's looking outside the window.

"But you did not tell me", he returned his eyes in his book.

"I don't see the necessity of telling you", her grasp tightened into her mug, as she stares into it.

"Okay. So, you'll be home again", he stood and turned his back; he's about to leave. "But before you leave, I'd like to tell you that you had been a good friend to me."

She looked at him; he cannot see the saddest eyes staring at his back for sure. She smiled bitterly and said –

"You haven't been my friend. I haven't been your friend. We haven't been friends, not even once." She was surprised with her sudden reply, but there's no way to take back the words she said.

He turned and looked at her. "What are you talking about?"

"We show that we are happy when we're together, though we both know we are in extreme sorrow. We haven't expressed real emotions. We always hide what we have inside. In every story that we share about ourselves, about our pasts, we cover up the seemingly most disastrous parts. We think that we might misinterpret and misjudge each other. We think that if we reveal the entirety of our being, we may not accept each other. We just pretended to be friends because we are in a place of strangers. We have no other choice, so when we found each other we talked and told ourselves, 'At least I wouldn't be bored that much.' We were happy, but then we know nothing will be permanent because we were both using each other." She feels like her heart stops with each word she says.

He was stunned. He did not say anything.

"Now, tell me once again, that I had been a good friend to you." She's barely breathing.

Silence ruled the room. There was no reply.

"I know I haven't, and you avoid from hurting me so you remain silent. But let me open the contents of my heart, at least before I run out of time. I tried my best to reach out for you. All I have to know is whether you will stay or not. But then I can see the answer is plainly 'No'. You had been so far away, though we are always together. Someday you will be back home, once again; this place will be forgotten..." she stopped finding courage to continue, and finally said, "...and so am I."

"Just accept things as they are. Things change, people change", he answered numbly.

"I fear you when you say that." She hanged her head and paused for a while, then continued, "You know what? I admire some people who easily accept all the painful encounters in their lives. But I wanna thank you anyway, you've acted so well, we've acted so well that I almost believed this friendship will stay. But then I almost forgot, this place isn't our home, and someday we will part ways to go back with whom and where we really belong. I must have known before I came here, that smiles here are so fake and mourns are so true; a place where intimacies are lies and people are nothing but illusion. I'm sorry for this. Goodbye to you." And she left before tears streak down her face.
